WASHINGTON (UPI) — U.S. researchers say the quest for raw materials as sources of biodiesel fuel has focused on an unlikely farm product — butter.

Scientists are investigating whether surplus, spoiled or non-food-grade butter can be used to make biodiesel fuel at competitive prices, an American Chemical Society release said Wednesday.

Global demand for biodiesel and the desire to expand the base of possible raw materials is motivating the research, the release said.

The United States alone has committed to producing 36 billion gallons of biofuel by 2022, including 1 billion gallons of biodiesel, a major increase from the current annual production level of about 11 billion gallons, the ACS reported.

Scientists recovered the fat from a quarter-ton of butter, 1 billion pounds of which are produced annually, and converted it into the fatty acid esters that constitute biodiesel. The resulting material met all but one of the official test standards for biodiesel, they said, only failing because of a slightly excessive sulfur content, and with further purification or by blending with biodiesel from other sources, butter biodiesel could add to the supply of bio-based fuel for diesel engines, the ACS said.

Not all that long ago, the mere thought of running a diesel in any form of motorsport would have had you laughed at. Diesel victories are now commonplace in long distance races thanks to the excellent power characteristics, reliability, the low fuel consumption of diesel engines and a battle between the two main TDI-engined cars in the form of the Peugeot 908 and Audi’s R15. Audi Sport Team Joest added to the diesel legend on the weekend with a 1-2-3 victory using newly developed Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) turbo-chargers on the R15′s 440 kW V10 engine. The Peugeot 908s locked out the first two rows in qualifying and led the race until the 16 hour mark, but one by one, they suffered engine failure, and after 24 hours, Audi took all three steps on the podium. It wasn’t exactly a rerun of the hare and the tortoise though, as the winning R15 racked up more 5,410 kilometers – more distance than has ever been achieved in 78 prior runnings of the French endurance classic. This was all the more remarkable in that it eclipsed a record set in 1971 by a Porsche 917 when the Hunaudières straight had no speed-slowing chicanes. Well done Audi! Read More

“Jatropha,” a non-food plant used as a material for biofuel

Toyota Tsusho Corp announced June 10, 2009, that it made investment in JOil Pty Ltd, a Singapore-based company researching and marketing plants for biofuel raw materials.

Toyota Tsusho is planning to start operating a seed and seedling business for “jatropha,” a non-food plant used as a material for biofuel, in Latin America with the view to developing jatropha farms in the future.

The company has been engaged in the biodiesel fuel (BDF) business by, for example, participating in BDF manufacturing process development. In the company’s BDF business, material costs account for more than half the entire cost of producing BDF. Therefore, it has been required to procure non-food materials on a stable basis at a low cost.

It is possible that jatropha will be supplied at a low price in the future because jatropha, a non-food tree, can easily be grown even on non-agricultural land.

Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL), a research institute funded by the Singaporean government, promotes the selective breeding of jatropha and established a tissue culture technology to produce large volumes of superior plants. JOil mass-produces and markets superior plants under an exclusive licensing agreement with TLL for the patent on this technology.
