Free Home Sustainability Assessment

Accredited home sustainability assessors provide a face to face opportunity for people to ask and hear about other programs and rebates that can help them improve the environmental performance of their home.

Households are often overwhelmed by the amount of information available describing the best actions to save energy and water and to reduce greenhouse gases. It can be difficult to decide what action to take.

Householders can access a free, comprehensive Home Sustainability Assessment to reduce their energy and water bills, increase the comfort of their home and help reduce damaging carbon pollution. This independent assessment by a qualified expert assessor will provide advice from the smallest behaviour change to major investments such as a solar hot water system or photovoltaic panels. From this assessment, householders will get a tailored, expert report listing the most effective changes for their home.

The assessment will involve the physical inspection of major energy and water systems relating to thermal comfort, water heating, lighting, refrigeration, cooking, entertainment, water efficiency and outdoor consumption, and waste management. The length of the inspection will be influenced by the amount of information readily available, the size of the property and the number of energy and water systems to be considered. Each assessment should take around 1.5 hours to complete.

People who make energy and water efficiency changes to their home reap the savings that come from using less energy and water.

Cost of living is not the only saving. At the same time, each household that improves its energy and water consumption reduces the carbon footprint of their home.

Consider that the average household contributes 14 tonnes of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere each year and draws an average 292,000 litres.

Transforming our homes to be more energy efficient and water smart makes sense for our own cost of living and for the environment.

By making improvements to our homes today we can ensure that the homes of the next generation cost less to heat and cool, are more comfortable and contribute less carbon pollution.

ABSA WELCOMES GREEN LOAN ANNOUNCEMENT

The Association of Building Sustainability Assessors (ABSA) has welcomed a
number of changes to the Green Loans Program announced today by the

Minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts, Mr Garrett.

ABSA Chairman Wayne Floyd said today that many of the changes were in line> with the organisation’s representations to government.

ABSA is the accrediting body for assessors under the Household
Sustainability Assessment Scheme. Householders applied for a Green Loan
after having their home assessed by ABSA members, who must have completed a
training course, and obtained the required insurance cover and Police
check.

“Changes such as the extra 600,000 assessments and weekly caps on
assessment bookings are welcome. The announcement of additional work for
assessors under the Green Start program in 2011 should result in a
continuation of work for our members.

“These are all positive moves for the sustainability industry and will
help to ensure that our members can be more confident about their long term> future,” he said.

However, Mr Floyd said the cap of 5,000 assessors working on the Green
Loans Program would create problems. There are currently about 7,000
member assessors accredited by ABSA with a further 2,000 applications being
processed.

“We don’t know yet how the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage
and the Arts (DEWHA), which runs this scheme, will determine which of our> members will make the cut and who will lose out.

“This is particularly frustrating as ABSA warned the Department last
August that the number of people seeking accreditation as assessors was far
higher than anticipated and that there would be too many assessors for the> 360,000 assessments originally budgeted for.

There was also no mention in the announcement of quality control or
auditing, issues which ABSA would be vigorously pursuing with the
Department.

“ABSA will continue to have discussions with government to ensure the
long term viability of the sustainability industry” Mr Floyd said.

Step 1 - Book your free home sustainability assessment
At no cost, a qualified home sustainability assessor will visit your home to investigate energy and water consumption patterns to identify actions that your household can take to save energy and water.

Step 2 - Receive your tailored home sustainability assessment report
valid for six months, including:
the best water and energy saving changes you can make to your home
practical information to get your household started.

The report is the first step in qualifying for an interest-free Green Loan of up to $10,000 from one of the Green Loans participating financial institutions.

Only one Green Loan is provided per home sustainability assessment report—but one loan can support many individual actions.
